
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting a recessed infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with steam and moisture. It’s a wet environment, and when you mix water with electricity, you can’t afford to guess. You need to be certain that nothing is leaking current where it shouldn’t. Here is how we actually handle the insulation to make sure everything stays safe. Stopping the steam Water vapor is sneaky. It finds its way into standard housings without you even noticing. To stop that, we use high-temp silicone gaskets and IP-rated seals around the chassis. It keeps the moisture far away from the live terminals. The heating element itself sits inside high-purity quartz. That’s your first line of defense. But if a seal ever fails, moisture can “track” across the insulators and cause a short. To stop that from happening, we use reinforced alumina ceramics for the end-caps. It’s a small detail, but it’s what keeps the unit from failing. Dealing with leakage If you’re installing a recessed unit, it has to be hard-wired to a dedicated ground. No shortcuts here. We use a double-insulated chassis. Think of it as a safety net. If a wire ever rubs raw and hits the casing, the RCD (your residual current device) trips instantly. It kills the power before the ceiling frame ever becomes energized. One quick tip: check your circuit breaker. Make sure it’s rated for the lamp’s wattage. If it’s too low, you’ll deal with those annoying “nuisance trips” every time the heater spikes during start-up. The heat vs. seal struggle Here’s the tricky part. Tight seals are great for safety, but they trap heat. If you seal a unit too tightly, the internal electronics basically bake themselves alive. We solve this with vented heat sinks. They let the air move so the components can breathe, but they’re designed so that direct water sprays can’t get inside. You might notice a tiny dip in energy efficiency because of those vents. But it’s a trade-off worth making. It stops the internal wiring from getting brittle and cracking over time, which is the only way to keep the heater from burning out in a humid bathroom.
