
Why your bathroom heater keeps dying (and how to actually fix it)
We’ve all seen those old-school bathroom “light-warmers.” You know the ones—the bright bulbs that try to do two jobs at once. The problem is, they aren’t really built for the steam and humidity of a real shower. We see them fail all the time. Steam creeps into the housing, shorts out the circuit, and suddenly you’re left in the cold. That’s why we’ve moved toward high-IP rated infrared heaters. They’re actually built for wet rooms.
The difference you can actually feel
Think about it: traditional heat lamps try to warm up the air. But in a bathroom with a ventilation fan humming away, you’re basically just heating air that’s being sucked right out of the room. It’s a waste. Infrared is different. It sends out shortwave radiation that travels in a straight line. It doesn’t care about the air temperature; it hits your skin or the floor directly.**It’s instant.**You don’t have to stand around waiting for the room to warm up—you feel the heat the second you flip the switch.
Keeping the water out
A good waterproof rating is more than just a rubber seal. We use sealed quartz glass and connectors that don’t mind a bit of moisture. Here’s the thing: when your bathroom hits 90% humidity, moisture settles right on the heating element. In a cheap unit, that causes “thermal shock.” The glass cracks, the unit burns out, and you’re back to square one. To stop that from happening, we put special coatings on the IR tubes. This spreads the heat out evenly so you don’t get those dangerous “hot spots” that stress the glass when the temperature swings.
The “catch” with installation
Now, I want to be honest about the setup. You can’t just swap these in like a standard light bulb and call it a day. These heaters pull more current. If you’re dealing with an old bathroom circuit, you might find yourself tripping the breaker more often than you’d like. You’ll need to make sure your wiring can actually handle the load. They do the same job as those old light-warmers, but the electrical needs are different. It’s worth the effort, though. You get a faster warm-up and way more peace of mind, as long as your grounding is solid and you’re safe from any leakage currents.
