
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “steam torture” test
Let’s be honest: the bathroom is a nightmare for electronics. One minute it’s freezing cold, and the next, you’ve turned the shower on high and the whole room is a thick cloud of steam. Then, the heater kicks in and blasts the air with heat. That constant swing from damp and cold to searingly hot is exactly what kills most infrared lamps. If the build quality is even slightly off, you’re looking at rust, corrosion, and a dead heater. The invisible enemy Here’s the thing about moisture: it doesn’t just stay on the outside. It sneaks in. Water vapor finds the tiniest gaps in the seals and settles right on the electrical contacts and the quartz envelope. Once it gets inside the lamp base, it starts eating away at the electrodes. We don’t want to find that out after you’ve already installed the unit in a customer’s wall. So, we use damp-heat aging tests. Basically, we shove the heaters into a steam chamber and simulate years of bathroom humidity in just a few weeks. We push them until they break just to see where the seals give out or where the wiring fails. It’s all about the seal We use high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the heat without cracking. But the glass isn’t usually what fails. The real trouble is the connection. If the seal between that quartz tube and the metal end-cap isn’t perfect, moisture hits the filament. That’s a death sentence for the lamp. It oxidizes almost instantly, and the lifespan plummets. Our tests make sure the potting compounds and seals actually stay tight when things get sweaty. Finding the sweet spot There’s always a bit of a tug-of-war between raw power and how long a product lasts. High-wattage lamps feel great because they heat up instantly. But that instant heat causes the materials to expand rapidly. When you mix that mechanical stress with a humid room, the connectors take a beating. You could have a lamp that heats up in a blink, but it might pop and die after six months. We’d rather take a slightly slower ramp-up time if it means the unit actually lasts for years. We don’t guess. We test. Because the last thing anyone wants is a faulty heater wired into a bathroom wall.
