If you’re heating silicon wafers and your energy is bouncing around the chassis instead of hitting the target, you’re just wasting power. Worse, you’re turning your oven walls into a giant heat sink. That’s where gold-coated reflectors come in.
Getting the heat to stay put
Most people start with aluminum reflectors. They’re common, but they soak up too much energy. Gold is different. It’s incredibly good at bouncing infrared energy right back onto the wafer surface. Think of it as focusing a beam of light. Instead of the radiation bleeding into the oven walls, it stays locked on the workpiece. It’s a much cleaner way to handle energy.
The trade-offs (because there’s always a catch)
Here’s the thing: you can’t just throw gold on a reflector and call it a day. You have to balance the raw power with how you move the heat away. High-wattage IR lamps are great for getting your wafers up to temperature fast. But when you use gold to concentrate all that energy into one tight spot, the ends of those lamps get incredibly hot. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, you’ll fry your seals. It’s a quick way to kill your lamps. You need enough airflow to keep things stable, or you’ll be replacing hardware way more often than you’d like.
Making it work on the line

A sudden voltage spike will torch a high-density IR lamp a lot faster than bad ventilation will. Keep the power steady, and these things will hum along just fine.
