
Why we’re ditching ovens for IR in sensor packaging
Lately, there’s been a real push to get semiconductor packaging toward carbon neutrality. For a long time, we’ve just relied on big convection ovens. But honestly? They’re energy hogs. You end up heating the entire air inside a giant chamber just to get a small part up to temperature. It’s a waste. That’s why we’re moving toward infrared (IR) heating. Instead of heating the air, IR goes straight for the substrate. It’s cleaner, it’s faster, and it stops that constant energy leak while the machine is just sitting there idling. Getting the heat exactly where it needs to go When you’re packaging sensors, you’re working with a very tight thermal budget. You can’t just blast everything with heat. With short-wave IR, we can dump heat directly into the packaging material without heating up the entire machine frame. This is a huge win for your timeline. You aren’t standing around for 30 minutes waiting for a chamber to stabilize. You hit your curing or bonding temperature in seconds. And here’s the best part: less ramp-up time means fewer kWh per wafer. This is where the real carbon reduction happens. It’s not about putting a “green” sticker on the machine; it’s about actually using less power to make the same amount of product. The hardware side of things We usually go with quartz-halogen elements for this. They’ve got the intensity you need to cure sensor encapsulants quickly. Plus, you can set them up in precise zones, which is a lifesaver when you’re trying to avoid overheating sensitive silicon dies. But it’s not all magic. There’s a catch. Those high-intensity lamps get incredibly hot at the socket and the wiring. If you crank up the wattage to speed up your line, you have to be smart about your cooling blowers and heat sinks. If you skimp on the venting, you’re just going to fry your controllers. Cleaning up the factory floor One thing I love about switching to IR modules is how much space you save. You stop thinking in “batches” and start thinking in “flow.” You can ditch those massive, power-hungry ventilation systems that old convection setups require. The whole production line shrinks. It just makes the entire packaging stage feel leaner and a lot less wasteful.
