The Reality of Collecting Heat Data
We lean on IR systems for heat mapping because they don’t touch the product. In a vacuum chamber, a physical probe is a liability—it can contaminate everything or mess up the laminar flow. But here’s the catch: response time is everything. If your sensor is sluggish, you’ll get overshoot. By the time the controller realizes the temperature has spiked, you’ve already scorched the substrate. That’s why we hunt for sensors with low thermal mass. We need that data loop to close in milliseconds, or the whole process fails.
Fighting the Noise
Wiring up sensors in a Fab is basically a war against electrical noise. Those high-wattage heaters put out massive amounts of EMI. To keep the signal clean, we use shielded, twisted-pair cabling and cold-junction compensation. If your grounding is even slightly off, your data starts to drift. And that’s where things get messy. Your software starts processing “ghost” temperatures, and suddenly your digital transformation is based on a lie.
The Trade-off: Precision vs. Lifespan
Here is the honest truth about high-precision sensors: they take a beating. You’re always balancing sensitivity against how long the part actually lasts. The more sensitive the probe, the faster that junction wears out under extreme thermal cycling. Because of that, we suggest swapping them out every six months. If you need sub-degree accuracy for 300mm wafer uniformity, you just can’t trust a sensor that’s been in there for years. The trick is making sure the maintenance team can swap them quickly without knocking the heater alignment out of spec. It’s a delicate dance, but it’s the only way to keep the line running clean.
