
Why we obsess over dielectric testing for our IR lamps
When you’re building infrared lamps for heavy-duty industrial gear, the difference between a heater that works and a total electrical disaster is basically a few microns. That’s a terrifyingly small margin. Because of that, we don’t do “batch sampling.” We don’t just test one out of every ten and hope for the best. Every single lamp tube that leaves our shop goes through the wringer—full withstand voltage and insulation resistance tests. Every. Single. One.
The scary part: Dielectric breakdown
High-wattage IR lamps live in a brutal environment. They get hot. Really hot. As that quartz envelope heats up, the insulators and connectors start to shift. If there’s a tiny void in the ceramic or a hairline crack in the seal—something you can’t even see—the voltage will just jump right across it. We call this dielectric breakdown. To stop it from happening in your factory, we push our tubes way past their rated voltage right here in our shop. If a tube fails the “hipot” test? It goes in the trash. No second chances.
Why we bother with 100% testing
Think about your production line. One bad lamp isn’t just a nuisance; it can trip a breaker or, in a worst-case scenario, energize the entire machine chassis. We check the insulation resistance to make sure the current stays exactly where it belongs—inside the filament circuit. We don’t want it leaking into the aluminum reflector or the mounting frame. It’s the only way to keep your PLC boards safe and make sure your operators don’t get a nasty shock.
The trade-off
Look, being this rigid slows things down. It adds another step to the assembly line and adds time to the lead clock. But if you’re running high-voltage setups, it’s the only way to sleep at night. It guarantees your gear won’t burn out in the first 48 hours of commissioning. You get a product built for the long haul. Just make sure your onsite wiring matches our terminal requirements. Because here’s the thing: if your grounding is messy, even the best-tested lamp in the world can’t save your equipment from electrical noise.
